I am so thankful I went to a chiropractor….

Back in 1980, after a year of therapies, medications and the likelihood of surgery, I finally went to a chiropractor. I can’t believe how well it worked for me. I had been suffering with terrible low back pain that radiated down the backs of both my legs. The medical doctors said I had a scoliosis and after a year of non-resolution, we started discussing surgery. Luckily, my parents took me to a chiropractor and I was helped almost instantly. I was so impressed that I decided to become a chiropractor.

Dream of becoming a Chiropractor

So, 1996, I left my home in New York and headed to Atlanta, Georgia to pursue my chiropractic degree. Little did I know that going to chiropractic school would not only allow me to fulfill my dream of becoming a chiropractor, it allowed me to meet my wonderful wife, Shannon. Who, by the way, is a native Nova Scotian and is the reason for us practising in Elmsdale.

Elmsdale Community Chiropractic

Together, Shannon and I have grown our clinic into a local namesake within the community. To put it simply, “We love to serve”. If we feel we can help you, then it’s likely we can. If we feel you would respond better somewhere else, we’ll share that with you to. It’s all about helping the patient achieve their own health goals and needs.

At Home

Shannon and I live only fifteen minutes away in Fall River with our two children, Jack and Xavier. And, I mustn’t forget Rio, our hyperactive Australian Shepherd. As a family we love spending our weekends up in Pugwash with Shannon’s parents. On occasion, we do visit my home in New York to spend time with family, particularly my mother. Luckily, my mom loves to travel and visits Nova Scotia on a regular basis.

On a more personal note

I have become a very active runner. At least 4 or 5 times a week, I’m hitting the pavement. I don’t know what it is about running that intrigues me. I think it is just the challenge of going a little bit further or finishing a little bit quicker. I’m just not sure why I like it, I just do. Then in the summers, I love getting on the motorcycle. I’ve been up through Newfoundland, around through New England. Obviously, I’ve seen most of Nova Scotia on the bike. You have a whole new appreciation for travelling when you do it on a bike. It’s purely magic. But of all the things I love to do, spending my free time with my kids is the best. I just hope I bring as much joy into there lives as they do for me.

Chiropractic Gave me Purpose

At the end of everyday I give thanks. I give thanks for my wonderful family who give me such love strength and support. I give thanks for my good health and healthy habits which fuel my active lifestyle and will hopefully continue into later years. Most of all, I’m so thankful I went to a chiropractor all those years ago. Not only did he save me from my chronic suffering; it was that experience that ended up shaping my life as it is today. I guess the best way to say it is, it gave me purpose. And for that I am most thankful.

I suffered with headaches!

For as long as I could remember, I suffered with headaches. Now I am not talking about the occasional headache, I was having headaches 3 to 5 times a week! In fact, something that still stands out to me today is that whenever I would visit my grandmother she would say, “There’s something wrong with you, I have never known a child to have so many headaches.” I must say that I agreed with her however, after countless visits to various doctors throughout my childhood, I eventually just gave up.

I was a Little Nervous

Years passed and when I was 19, my cousin recommended I see a doctor just one more time. This time the doctor happened to be a Doctor of Chiropractic. This particular doctor examines my spine, takes some x-rays and then takes the time to explain her findings. She told me that there was nerve pressure on the nerves of my upper neck and was likely something that occurred early in my childhood. Read more»

She said she felt this could be the source of my headaches and suggested that we start a series of “adjustments” to help relieve some of the nerve pressure. I must admit, I was a little nervous at first thinking the adjustment might hurt but, it actually felt great. The best part was that within a very short period of time I was no longer suffering from headaches.

This Experience Guided Me to becoming a Chiropractor

This experience is what guided me to become a chiropractor. I was truly astonished that after suffering with headaches for 15 years, something so simple corrected my headaches. After my own chiropractic success, I drove to Atlanta, Georgia with my sister to check out Life University, the largest chiropractic school is the world. After visiting the school, I knew this was where I needed to be. Not only am I grateful for graduating from the best chiropractic school in the world, but that is also where I met my husband Chris.

My Passion Became Chiropractic Care for Children

While in chiropractic school I studied various techniques however, my true passion become chiropractic care for children. Very rarely will I see children with neck pain and back pain but often parents consult me when their children are experiencing ear infections, colic, growing pains, sleeping issues and many other common childhood conditions.

Our Practice Philosophy

Our practice philosophy is simple. Your body has the ability to heal itself, as long as there is no nerve interference. I have the privilege day after day to help people that have been told that they have to live with a particular condition and then like myself, have phenomenal success with chiropractic care.

With my Family

My other love, besides chiropractic, is spending time with my husband and our two boys Jack who is 4 and Xavier, who is 2. During the summer months we enjoying spending time together at my parents cottage and boating. Chris and I also really enjoy motorcycling and running. During the rest of the year we keep pretty busy between pre-school, swimming and gymnastics for the boys.

Even with the great success I had conquering my headaches, I still receive chiropractic adjustments about once a week to help maintain my overall health. Both Jack and Xavier have had regular adjustments since the day they were born. I must say compared to other children, our boys are very rarely sick and have never had any of the typical childhood problems. I am confident it is because of their regular chiropractic care.
